Tell us a little about yourself. (What you do for a living, for fun, etc.)

I live in Northern Virginia, USA with my wife and two daughters and I am an avid reader and writer. I have taught middle and high school English for ten years. I have many artistic interests and have worked as an independent photographer. It's one of my passions. I created the book cover for The War Within and several other products. I wrote The War Within while on leave from work.

Do you write full time or part time

I haven't been able to physically do much lately so I write full time now.

How do you structure your day when you write

Actually, I have a very simplistic structure. I write during the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. while my children are at school because once they get home there is no use in trying to concentrate. I also occasionally write in the middle of the night when I can't sleep.

Why do you write? (Example; For fun, to make extra money, a personal experience you want to share with the public)

Believe or not, I write because I like it. It is cathartic and usually the story wants out of my head so bad that I have no other choice but to write.

What are you working on right now / or your most recent work

My most recent and first published novel is The War Within. It is the first book in a series. I am currently working on book two.

What inspired you to create this book

My life inspired me to create this book. The family dynamics are based on my life and a close family member of mine suffers from the mental illness that is described in the book.

What genre do you write in and why did you choose it

I choose to write in the Fictional Lesbian Romance genre because it relates to who I am and I choose to write in the Fictional Romance genre in general because it's what I like to read.

What was the hardest thing about writing this book for you

The hardest thing about writing this book was trying not to sympathize with the deuteragonist.

What was the most rewarding

Finishing my first novel was the most rewarding part for me. I think that it is a great accomplishment to actually complete a full length novel, so I was just really happy that I finished it.

Are you a planner type person, or do you prefer to dive right in when you write

I plan, plan, plan. I list the characters and their personalities. I write down the main points of the story. I draw the entire plot out. I even assign a minimum word count to each plot element.

How much dialogue do you have with your readers

I have as much dialogue as my readers prefer. I answer questions daily on good reads and periodically I devote entire days to my readers by being available online for about twelve hours.

Do they influence your writing

No, my readers don't influence my writing. If I let that happen then it won't be my writing and I trust that my writing is what my readers want to read.

Do you recommend being a part of a support groups to help you with your writing

No, my readers don't influence my writing. If I let that happen then it won't be my writing and I trust that my writing is what my readers want to read.

Do you work with an editor If so, how much input do they have

I do not work with an editor. Well, let me say that I have not worked with a professional editor. Given that I was an English major and English teacher, I felt that I was more than equipped to do most of the editing myself. However, since I ended up editing more times than I care to count because my eyes only saw what my brain was saying the story was, I will probably end up using one with the next book.

Do you have any tips or useful resources on marketing

All I can say in terms of marketing is be prepared for hours and hours of social media. Besides word of mouth, it is the best way to get your book out there.

How are you publishing this book? (Indie / self-published, traditional)

My book is self-published.

What are your thoughts on book series

I love book series. When you get so enthralled in a story that you just don't want it to end, it is always a joy to find out that it doesn't. A lot of the books I read are trilogies but I have read series that contain four and five books and would mark in my calendar along with an alarm the release date for the next book in the series.

If this books is part of a series, can you tell us a little about the series overall

The series will chronicle how Kira functions within her relationships and the profound effect those relationships have on her marriage and her mental stability.

Do you have a strategy for finding reviewers

The only strategy I have for finding anything related to promoting a book is social media. Networking on social media and in groups similar to my genre has been very helpful.

What advice would you give to your younger self today

The advice I would give to my younger self would be to not wait to follow her dreams. I would tell her that when she write her short stories in college and she have to force herself to end them before they become too long, she should just let it flow. Keep writing until there is nothing left to write because she does not have to graduate from college before she can become a published author.

If you don’t already have one, do you have plans to have a book trailer and what are your thoughts on them overall

I think that book trailers are must these days. I used to show them to my students when it was time to switch novels or go to the book fair. They motivated my students to read a lot of books. I do have a book trailer for The War Within. It's the slide show kind with words and music, not the mini movie kind because I created it myself.

What are you working on next

My most recent and first published novel is The War Within. It is the first book in a series. I am currently working on book two.

When you come to a point in your writing where you get frustrated for some reason, how do you deal with it

When I get frustrated, I leave. Seriously, I have to not think about it or see my computer. I go to Starbucks or to the movies, anywhere my book is not.

What advice would you give a writer that is just starting out

You're probably not going to become a best seller as soon as your book is published but that doesn't mean it's never going to happen. Just keep writing and give things time to happen.
